Convert Persistent URLS to EZproxy URLS

All of the VIVA or VCCS licensed databases available to our users require that we control access and restrict it to persons affliated with the VCCS. We accomplish this by using a proxy server for all off-campus access to these databases. To engage the proxy server, the URL that connects the user to the vendor's database must be modified to include the proxy server information. When you save (bookmark) a article's URL for use in a reading list or class assignment, that URL must also be modified if students are to use those URLs from off-campus. This page is designed to help with that modification. The actual change that must be made is explained more fully at the bottom of this page.

Paste the saved URL into the text box and press Submit.  A new window will open with the converted URL needed to support off-campus access (the EZproxy URL).

Explanation of EZproxy URLs

To engage the off-campus proxy environment, an article's URL must have a prefix added that will cause the proxy server to determine if the user must be authenticated or not. This prefix consists of the following text:

http://ezproxy.vccs.edu:2048/login?url=

The saved (bookmarked) URL is then added after the "=" For example, a proxied link to Gale's "Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center" would look like this:

http://ezproxy.vccs.edu:2048/login?url=http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/viva2_vccs?db=OVRC
